Professionals need to control their handgun and maintain it's functionality while subduing the perpetrator. You may need to use the weapon for control and still maintain it's firing capability. When the slide of most automatic handguns is pressed to the rear it renders the weapon unable to fire.  A fully reinforced front shield, with checkered front plate, can assist in controlling the individual and sustain an incredible amount of impact force, preventing the weapon from coming out of battery.
